The Freedom Theatre’s new production, Atuwani<\/i>\u00a0opened\u00a0in Jenin on October 14th\u00a0and will soon embark on a\u00a0tour to villages, towns and refugee camps across the West Bank;\u00a0among them of course Atuwani where two performances will be held.<\/p>\n

The play\u00a0follows extensive research and interviews with\u00a0community members, with a special focus on the women who play a central role in Atuwani\u2019s struggle. It is performed by The Freedom Theatre’s first-year Theatre School <\/a>students.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo me this play is a perfect exercise in cultural resistance\u201d, says Faisal AbuAlheja who directs the play. \u201cWe go to a community that is facing unimaginable pressure and harassment from settlers and army.\u00a0Yet they have managed to stay together, to fight together. We collect their stories, analyze them, turn them into a play, and then our\u00a0students tell the stories to other communities around the West Bank.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
