It is the end of an era. Cinema Jenin, one of Palestine’s most well-known cultural institutions, has been demolished to give room for a commercial centre.
We are very concerned about the current trend in Palestine, where one cultural institution after another faces the risk of closure. This is partly due to the gradual decline of Palestinian civil society that gives way to increasing commercialisation and lack of appreciation for the value of culture.
While we grieve the loss of our close partners and friends, The Freedom Theatre is committed to continuing to advocate for and demonstrate through our work the vital importance of culture in creating a strong Palestinian civil society with engaged, critically-minded citizens who will one day form the foundation of a free Palestine.
