The Palestinian-Bedouin communities in the hills east of Jerusalem live under very difficult conditions, without access to clean water, healthcare and basic facilities. They face a constant threat of forced displacement from their lands, as they are located in an area that is strategically important for further expansion of illegal Israeli settlements.
Actors from The Freedom Theatre recently held playback theatre performances with Bedouin communities, who shared lived accounts relating to home demolitions, harassment by the Israeli army and lack of access to clean water and health facilities.
– We also learned about the strength of these people as they seek to retain their land and their livelihoods, says Faisal Abu Alheja, actor and project coordinator at The Freedom Theatre.
The performances are part of the preparations for the Freedom Bus ride in late September. An ensemble of Palestinian actors and musicians will spend nine days traveling to key sites of oppression and resistance within the West Bank. The ensemble will translate life stories of community members into improvised text, sound, movement, music and poetry. Performances will take place in community centers, theaters, and at site-specific locations such as checkpoints, settlements, olive groves, home demolition sites and the Wall. Through live video links, Palestinians in Gaza, Israel and the Diaspora will be invited to share their stories.
The Freedom Bus will also be a focal point for supporters around the world who wish to join the ride. Welcome onboard!
