The Freedom Bus is returning to the road.

A journey through Palestinian communities, where stories become theatre and solidarity becomes action.

An initiative of The Freedom Theatre, the Freedom Bus brings together Palestinian artists, communities and international participants through interactive theatre and cultural activism. It creates encounters rooted in listening, creative expression and collective action, connecting people across occupied Palestine and beyond.

A Journey That Began in 2011

Since its beginnings in 2011, the Freedom Bus has brought Palestinians and international participants together to learn from communities, witness their realities and take part in solidarity actions.

Its purpose is grounded in a shared belief: creative expression and active solidarity can help build a world shaped by justice, freedom and equality.

Stories at the Heart of the Journey

Playback Theatre is central to the Freedom Bus.

Community members share experiences, memories and stories. An ensemble of actors and musicians listens, then brings those stories to life through improvised performance.

Each encounter creates space for recognition, reflection and imagination. People tell their own stories, on their own terms, while participants are invited to listen, learn and consider their responsibility towards what they have witnessed.

Cultural Resistance in Action

The Freedom Bus connects artistic expression with practical solidarity. Performances and community encounters open space for shared experience, while solidarity activities respond to priorities identified with the host communities.

The journey also makes room for play, rest and joy (especially for children) and for imagining what freedom might mean in everyday life.

Keeping the Journey Alive: 2019–2020

In autumn 2019, The Freedom Theatre organised a four-day pilot Freedom Ride with students from its acting school, led by artist and theatre graduate Faisal Abu Alhayjaa.

Travelling through communities in the West Bank, including the Jordan Valley and Hebron, the students gathered stories and developed a short performance using Playback Theatre. The journey connected their artistic training with community encounters and laid the groundwork for a larger Freedom Ride planned for 2020.

Invitations were issued and preparations continued, but the planned 2020 journey was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pilot remains an important chapter in the Freedom Bus story: a new generation of artists carrying its practice forward.

Returning to the Road

The Freedom Theatre is developing a new edition of the Freedom Bus for 2026, in collaboration with Faz3a, a campaign of the Popular Struggle Coordination Committee, and participating communities.

The initiative brings together theatre, cultural exchange and solidarity with Palestinian communities facing displacement and settler violence. Programme details and opportunities to participate will be shared as preparations develop, in coordination with the host communities.
