Zakaria Zubeidi has decided to suspend the hunger strike after leading figures within the Palestinian security and Fatah managed to negotiate with the Minister of Interior to schedule a court hearing for Sunday, on the condition that Zakaria ends the strike. There has also been promises that Zakaria will be released on Sunday by these same leading figures.

Sources have informed us that the EU delegation has contacted the Prime Minister Salam Fayyad expressing their deep concerns regarding Zakaria’s case and the treatment of prisoners in PA (Palestinian Authority) custody in general. Thousands of people around the world have contacted PA representatives demanding justice for Zakaria and expressing their disappointment with the lack of transparency and rule of law. Many have drawn the similarities between PA rule under occupation and the Israeli occupation in their lack of respect for democratic values.

The Freedom Theatre is very relieved that the immediate danger to Zakaria’s life has been averted. At the same time we are aware that similar promises by the PA have been broken. Therefore The Freedom Theatre will continue asserting pressure on the Palestinian Authority until Zakaria Zubeidi is treated in accordance with Palestinian and International Law.
