When: December 13, @ 5 pm
Where: The Freedom Theatre, Jenin Refugee Camp
Albert Camus said about Caligula, the first of his plays, that he wrote it after reading the book “Twelve Caesars “ by the Roman historian Sotniyo. Camus chose the figure of the emperor Caligula and named the play after him. Caligula was the emperor who ruled over the Roman Empire between the years 12 and 14 A.D. The events of the play “Caligula” take place in Roman environment and conditions. All the characters belong to a historic time, that of the people who surrounded the emperor Caligula. Despite that, Camus wanted to present the play as a tragedy of his generation, a tragedy of thought. Also, he surpassed the Existentialists by stopping decisively at the ugliness of life, and extended that by rebelling against this ugliness and believing in the ability of the human being to change it.
