Our Theatre School students concluded their first year of training with an intensive workshop in Acting from Text, with Gary English, Artistic Associate and Consultant of The Freedom Theatre, and Ahmed Tobasi, Resident Artist at The Freedom Theatre. The workshop focused on text analysis, character development and scene study for realist text-based theatre.

This was the first major work in text-based theatre for this group of students, who began their three-year program in January 2014.

“It went extremely well – better than I think we all expected, and the actors grew tremendously”, says Gary English.

The students worked on scenes from The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, and The Island, by Athol Fugard. These plays were discussed both in terms of their historical context and in relation to the Palestinian context. After working intensively for five weeks, the workshop ended with presentations by the students. Below are some images of scenes from The Island, with Samah Mahmoud, Raneen Odeh, Osama Al Azzeh and Amir Abu Rob.
