The Freedom Theatre is thrilled to announce the appointment of Ahmed Tobasi as its new Artistic Director.
Born in Jenin Refugee Camp, Tobasi’s personal journey reflects the intertwined cultural and political struggles that shape Palestinian identity. Growing up amid the harsh realities of the Israeli occupation, the first and second Intifadas, and the repeated invasions and bulldozing of the camp, he endured being shot and became a political prisoner for four years at just 17.
Following his release, Tobasi joined The Freedom Theatre school, later moving to Norway to work and train with the prestigious Nordic Black Theatre in Oslo. He returned to Jenin in 2013, after the assassination of Juliano Mer-Khamis, and contributed extensively to the theatre’s Child & Youth program while performing and directing multiple professional productions. Most recently, Tobasi shared his own story in And Here I Am, written by Hassan Abdulrazzak, which toured internationally and won Best Production at the Sharm El Sheikh International Theatre Festival.
“To be Palestinian often means facing oppression in many forms,” Tobasi explains. “I aim to use the arts not only to resist the Israeli military occupation but also to address challenges within our own communities, including racism and sexism. My focus is to bring our work to the streets of Palestine, collaborate with isolated communities across the West Bank, and advocate for equal rights for all Palestinians. I look forward to expanding opportunities for children and youth, growing our theatre school, and engaging both local and global audiences in our mission of cultural resistance. The Freedom Theatre has always been a family of artists and fighters, and I am excited to continue building these collaborations while welcoming new voices to join us in the struggle for liberation.”
Tobasi honors the legacy of Juliano Mer-Khamis, The Freedom Theatre’s founding Artistic Director, who was tragically murdered in 2011. He also recognizes the tireless work of his friend and former Artistic Director Nabil Al-Raee, along with all those who have sacrificed to keep the theatre alive. Their passion, creativity, and dedication continue to make The Freedom Theatre a beacon of cultural resilience.
