11 July 2020 | The Freedom Theatre (TFT) participated in an international online discussion hosted by Cinéma du Sud (Southern Cinema Festival), organised by the Committee for a Just Peace in the Middle East in cooperation with Global Children Village (SOS).
The session featured Ahmed Tobasi, Artistic Director of The Freedom Theatre, alongside Chilean filmmaker Jaime Villarreal, following the screening of Villarreal’s film Journey of the Others.
About the Film
Journey of the Others turns its lens toward Jenin Refugee Camp, where The Freedom Theatre continues to nurture a vital artistic movement grounded in what TFT has long articulated as cultural resistance, the belief that theatre can be a space to reclaim voice, dignity, imagination, and agency.
Through intimate encounters with Palestinian youth, the film explores how young people, living under the daily realities of occupation, choose performance not as escape, but as an act of presence and courage, insisting on the right to dream and to create.
The documentary also reflects The Freedom Theatre’s international reach, including the touring of its acclaimed production The Siege to New York, USA, affirming TFT’s role as a Palestinian cultural institution whose work resonates across borders and speaks to global audiences.
A Space for Dialogue
This conversation formed part of TFT’s commitment to international cultural exchange, where Palestinian theatre is not framed as a marginal story, but as a contemporary artistic practice, rooted in community, shaped by struggle, and engaged with the world.
