We are pleased to announce the appointment of Nabil Al-Raee as the Artistic Director of The Freedom Theatre.
Nabil Al-Raee joined The Freedom Theatre in 2007, initially to lead theatre workshops for youth. The first play he directed was The Journey, depicting the experiences of a group of young people longing to travel to the sea. He continued to stage plays, teach at The Freedom Theatre Acting School and develop the pedagogy of the school with Juliano Mer Khamis and Micaela Miranda. After the assassination of Juliano Mer Khamis in 2011, Nabil assumed responsibility for the artistic direction of the theatre, and together with his colleagues developed a pedagogy of theatre under occupation, about which he lectures and participates in conferences internationally and in Palestine. He continued his theatrical work on stage with one of our last productions, The Siege, before taking some time out for his own projects. He returns, once again and is currently working on a production with a theatre in Pakistan, a collaboration of both Palestinian and Pakistani artists exploring The Power of Narrative.

His invaluable experience with The Freedom Theatre’s Acting School will contribute to the programme once more when the new cohort of students will begin in September 2018. A statement by The Freedom Theatre in 2011 still rings true today:
Our work will always be part and parcel of the Palestinian resistance against the several occupations we face. We follow in the footsteps of the cultural icons of the resistance movement who painted in their various works the most beautiful pictures of patriotism and connection to this land that is entitled to life, as was uttered by Mahmoud Darwish in one of his poems. We shall persevere for our beautiful Palestine, striving for unlimited freedom.”
A warm welcome to Nabil from everyone at The Freedom Theatre, our friends and supporters in Palestine and abroad.
